Did you know? The Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) became a major qualifier on the Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2021. This pivotal race is one of just eight offering points on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale to the top five finishers toward a Kentucky Derby (G1) berth.

Held over 1 1/8 miles on Turfway Park’s Tapeta track, it’s the only major Derby qualifier run on a synthetic surface—and its impact is undeniable. The race produced Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (2022) and runner-up Two Phil’s (2023). First inaugurated in 1972 as the Latonia Spiral Stakes, this historic race has had six name changes (including twice returning to "Spiral") before becoming the Jeff Ruby Steaks in 2018.
